Pitch Blender at the Pier Sunday July 21, 2024 ✻ 6-8PM A FREE 3-part monthly music series at the Gantry Crane, Pier 8 Presented by the City of Hamilton
The City of Hamilton and local community choir, Earth, Wind, & Choir (EW&C), have teamed up to present an eclectic live music series on the third Sunday of every month from July - September. Pier 8’s Gantry Crane will be brought to life with a spectrum of idiosyncratic music styles - choral, free jazz, avant-roots, princess-prog, traditional compositions juxtaposed with improvised and participatory collaborations. The focus is hyper-local: emcees, poets, visual artists, and vendors all thoughtfully selected from EW&C’s extensive network of creatives.
The first instalment of this community-oriented music series will be Sunday July 21st from 6pm and will run for 2 hours. An audience of all ages will be able to experience spoken word poetry from Hamilton’s Poet in Place, Lishai Peel accompanied by ethereal duo, Malfiore; atmospheric dark-wave from Concavity; and lo-fi dream-pop from Slow Reader. The sonic journey will be complemented by an art installation from visual artist, Andres Miramontes. The backdrop for the evening will be the Gantry Crane at Hamilton’s historic Pier 8, a location that is a testament to the city's rich history of industry, culture, and community. While this is the inaugural Pitch Blender event at Pier 8, EW&C recently hosted “Pitch Blender 1000”, a sold-out melodious matinee of choral and solo performances from singer/songwriter and harpist, Juliana LaChance; Toronto’s Georgian choir, Darbazi; polyphonic singers, The Substrate Quartet and EW&C.
More than just a choir, EW&C was founded in 2009 by Sarah Good and Annie Shaw. Based in Hamilton’s North End, this community ensemble has been a creative outlet for 100 unique members over 15 years. Notable alumni of EW&C include Terra Lightfoot and Lee Reed and the choir has appeared on recordings with Wax Mannequin and Sianspheric. EW&C’s values of creativity and curiosity have sparked connections resulting in dynamic collaborations between local musicians and collectives.
“The magic of choir: the community it created. I have learned a great deal from them and their willingness to experiment, to take chances, while always being focused on making a great sound.”
