SCM chat with Brent Wirth from Madlands, March 9, 2026

I had a chance to speak with Brent Wirth from Madlands. Back in the mid-2000s, he was a part of a group out of Hamilton, Ont., called “Thought Beneath Film.” Both of us lost touch for a time, and now we reconnect to discuss Brent’s latest project, “Madlands.” Brent tells us the backstory of becoming someone who is not authentic: leaving the music industry and taking back one’s individuality and making music that is truer to oneself. Brent and I had a fascinating conversation, and I’m excited to spin songs from Madlands on SCM. The Witching Hour single and video are some of the best I’ve seen in some time.

SCM chat with Brennagh Burns Lydia Stephen and Liam from Floating Mansions, March 11, 2026

We had a chat about an upcoming event featuring Brenna Burns, Lydia Steven, and Liam from Floating Mansions at Lukaya Cafe on March 27th. We get the skinny on how they are all connected, with Brenna hosting Lydia at open mics at Lucia Cafe and Liam connecting with Lydia through a songwriting group called Shaky Knees. Lydia shared her experience working with the band Kasador, including recording backup vocals and writing for their EP, which was featured on Hockey Night in Canada. She described a memorable moment when the band recognized their song playing on TV during a hockey game. Lydia expressed gratitude for the opportunity and mentioned performing live with the band in St. Catharines and Guelph.

Liam backtracks for us the start of Floating Mansions and the current lineup, with the first meeting of Lydia at a show. He explains the venturing into recording at home and the current lineup shaping the sound of the band.

Brennagh provides an update on the new material, the evolution of the subject matter of the songs, and the challenges of finding time to record.

I can see all three of these artists doing more shows together this year!

SCM chat with Jeff Butters, Thurs, March 11, 2026

Jeff Butters and I chatted about the genesis of the Hamilton Poster Exhibition and the process of selecting pieces to display.

“This exhibition draws together selections from three passion-fueled and often overlapping collections to reveal a snapshot of the creative force that goes into marketing the shows, artists, and venues in Hamilton. Rather than an homage to favorite performers, for the collectors, it is all about the artwork. Though designed and printed for a one-night show and hastily posted on walls and signposts, Hamilton music posters have a potent and robust blend of art and creativity.”

“The posters in this exhibition represent a very creative chapter in Hamilton’s musical story, reflecting local venues, musicians, and music genres. They are proof that Hamilton is a showcase city that is capable of hosting outstanding national and international touring acts.
