Interviews this week!

Cassie gives the back story on how she got started; moving forward from being in a band to a solo artist and seeing the benefits of having different ears helping her with her music. On another note I'm still not sure whether or not she is a secret agent for Canada!

In the chat Jessica fills us in early pop culture influences, musical influences in her song writing, and working with other song writings.

Toronto’s Jessica Sevier is a country music artist, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist making waves with her latest single, a nostalgic country-rock tune, “Legends of the Summer”. Since her debut single "Ghost of Tom" in 2019, Sevier’s music has been collectively streamed over 1 million times. Performing live has been a key part of growing her audience, and Sevier has shared the stage with artists including Jason McCoy and Tim and the Glory Boys, and has performed at music festivals and renowned venues including Whisky Jam in Nashville and the legendary Lee’s Palace in Toronto. Sevier has also showcased at Canadian Music Week each year since 2021.

“Legends of the Summer” is perfectly suited for the season, and features Sevier’s distinct and sultry vocals with lyrics evoking cherished memories of past young love. The track is produced by Matt Koebel and written by powerhouse country songwriters Emma Lee, Karen Kosowski, Jessica Cayne, and Maddie Walker. Upon release in May 2023, the track received editorial support from DSPs and was immediately added at SiriusXM.

Growing up, Sevier took piano and voice lessons and had an elementary school music teacher that saw her passion for music and encouraged her to explore it through school musical productions. Sevier achieved level 8 voice exam at the Royal Conservatory of Music with honours, and studied up to level 10 voice at the University of Western Ontario in the Bachelor of Music Program with a focus in vocal performance. She went on to graduate at the top of her class in a college engineering/production program and she is a multi-instrumentalist, mainly focusing on piano, guitar, and harmonica.

Sevier’s charisma and expressive voice caught the attention of Sony/ATV and Liz Rose Music’s most talented songwriters, leading to Sevier recording her successful single "Confetti", released in March 2022. Produced in Nashville alongside Grady Saxman (Luke Combs and Tenille Arts), "Confetti" was a significant breakthrough, earning extensive airplay on Canadian country radio and racking up over 400,000 streams. The track secured the #1 spot on the Canadian Indie Country Radio Charts, solidifying Jessica's presence in the country music landscape.

A testament to her talent as a songwriter, Sevier earned a spot to compete on the TV show The Shot: Remastered in 2020, and her music captivated audiences. She also earned recognition as a top 7 artist to watch at the 2022 CMW (Canadian Music Week) Featured Artist/Performer. Additionally, Sevier was selected among the top 12 contenders in the CNE Rising Star Competition in 2020.

Sevier is currently writing for her next project and is performing throughout Ontario in the coming months.

In the chat with Zack we find out how he transitioned into music; the importance of music unlocking another part of his brain, and the backstory of his most recent release.

Bio

"Zack Elliott is a contemporary folk artist based in Bolton, Ontario. His biggest influences are the likes of Gregory Alan Isakov, Iron & Wine, City and Colour, and The Tallest Man on Earth. Zack creates music, which regularly features intricate fingerpicking, combines melancholy-laced melodies with poetic, evocative writing. He hopes his music can meet listeners where they are and make them feel less isolated in their life experiences.

After having played various instruments throughout his childhood and adolescence, Zack began writing songs during the onset of the COVID-19 lockdowns. During this time, he wrote and recorded several songs in his home studio, 6 of which formed his debut EP 'Caught Half Alive'. He independently released this project in March 2021 which has since garnered over 11.5k streams.

It's been said that the project:

"Creates a distinct dream-like atmosphere... with striking imagery" and "celebrates that mystery in which our physical sense can lead us to exotic places" - Dr. K. Telford, Daemen University

Zack performs consistently around Southern Ontario and has just concluded a short-run tour through Ottawa, Montréal, and Toronto with his trio "The Vanishing Pheasants". He also has broken into the festival and conference circuit, performing at Gussapolooza 2022 and showcasing at the 2022 Folk Music Ontario Conference, 2022 NERFA Conference, and is currently seeking out more of these opportunities. He is in the process of demoing songs for a new project to release in April 2024. He continues to develop his artistry with the Canadian Musicians Co-op and the 2023 cohort of the RBC Artscape Launchpad Music Entrepreneurship Program. Zack's following has grown as he continues to engage with his 11.6k+ social media followers and regularly live-streams on TikTok. "

The Sick Things - From Montreal... "They’ve been described as nostalgic for the 1970s, an homage to Big Star and Cheap Trick, and to the days when that punchy music style emerged, when rock ‘n’ roll became synonymous with sex, drugs and long-haired weirdos (quite befitting for this band)
