Matt Jelly talks with Mike Nabuurs about the Century theatre

If Canadian singer-songwriter Matt Paxton’s Back Home In The Village was the sound of hometowns and main streets, this record is the sound of the highway and dark country roads; genuine and with a raw tone. He has paved himself a new path. It was during a period of spiritual rebirth, whilst touring his debut album for one year nationally, as Matt puts it “hitting the road, traveling the unknown, the heart” that he began work on its follow up. It makes sense that his response was to keep moving on while only looking forward and in Until The Sky Begins To Change this manifests itself in a collection of work, colonized with conversational characters. The witty, lyrical illustrations are used to smooth the progress of rediscovering one’s self. When talking about influence, Paxton describes it as “difficult to put a finger on, I wrote these songs on the go, scratched down on whatever I could find at the time. I was reading a lot of English, Canadian and American poets, I started to explore William Blake and Jack Kerouac in particular, and I have always loved Leonard Cohen too. I admire songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Bob Dylan equally and would have to say that Dylan’s Visions of Johanna has definitely shaped my outlook on sculpting a song. All these people open the door for me; make me feel at home with my work.” The album is produced by Paxton’s two close friends Glen Marshall and Michael Keire (as was the case with the 2009 debut Back Home In The Village) and recorded at Vibewrangler Studio, a factory space in Paxton’s hometown in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
“Until The Sky Begins To Change” will be released on Down By The Point Records in March 2010.
